  • Sunday 23rd January 2000

    Not much done today.

  • Picked Sharon and Eve up from the airport.
  • Assembled headlight and front indicator assemblies.

  • Monday 24th January 2000

Attempted to assemble the carbs / intake manifold but can't figure out which fixings to use. The assembly guide is useless for anything to do with the assembly of the engine ancillaries. There were some studs that looked like they were for the threaded holes in the intake manifold, so I "Locktited" them in place.

    Tuesday 25th January 2000

Found the web site of the company that makes the special intake manifolds for Caterham and they had a picture of a couple of Weber DCOE carb's fitted to the manifold, so I was able to finish putting together the carb / manifold assembly. It looks fantastic!

Started fitting the hood (aka roof) - what a pain! The damn thing is very tight and almost impossible to get on.

Dual DCOE 40s mounted on the intake manifold. Note that the fuel inlet was eventually plumbed to the left - oposite to that shown.

Roof on - one of the trickier jobs.

Also went to the DMV web site ( >www.dmv.ca.gov ) to have a look at getting a "Special Interest" license plate ,AKA Environmental License Plate, or ELP.

The engine and gearbox arrive on the back of Guy Simpson's pickup truck - hooray! He had Jonathan at Rocky Mountain Sportscars deliver both his engine and my engine together to his work. It saved us some shipping costs. Started fitting the engine ancillaries to the engine. These include ...
  • Oil sump (pan)
  • Valve rocker cover
  • Distributor
  • Water pump
  • Fuel pump
  • Thermostat housing
  • Oil pressure sender
  • Temperture sender
  • Alternator

    Continued fitting engine ancillaries.

  • Found that the oil pressure sender wont fit because it has straight cut threads instead of "pipe" cut threads - grr.
  • Found out that there is no hole for the temperature sender in the cylinder head!! - grrr.
  • Found out that the sump plug wont fit into the hole in the oil sump - Grrrr.
  • Didn't find an oil dip stick! - GRRRR!

  • Saturday 29th January 2000

Assembled flywheel, clutch and clutch cover. Attached the gearbox to the bell housing. Attached the clutch and gearbox/bellhousing assembly to the engine. It's beginning to take shape......

    Sunday 30th January 2000

Finished off work on the gearbox: Fitted speedo' takeoff and reversing light switch. Fitted carburetor and intake manifold assembly to the engine and put the air filters on .... WOW!! It's looking really great now! Attached fan and radiator to the front of the car. Adjusted the static timing by positioning the distributor arm over one of the spark plug takeoffs on the distributor cap when the pointer on the crankshaft pully was 14 degrees Before Top Dead Centre. This is very rough and was only done to get the gear teeth on the distributor rotor shaft right with respect to the teeth on the cam shaft. The timing will have to be done properly when the engine is in the car and with the battery connected.

    Monday 31st January 2000

  • Fitted poppers to sides of the hood.
  • Attached lower parts of the side screen hinges to the windshield uprights.
  • Started to drill holes in the side screens for mounting the side mirrors - and the batteries in my drill died! Off to bed ...
